Story Behind Class Quest
Finding the right school for your children can be stressful and time-consuming for parents and guardians. They must consider location, class size, and special programs while navigating multiple sources for information. Unfortunately, there isn't a single platform that consolidates this data, causing busy parents to miss opportunities for quick, informed decisions and leading to feelings of being overwhelmed.
The Challenge
Parents and Guardians face a daunting task in finding the right school for their children, often juggling considerations like location, class size, and specialized programs. The challenge was creating an innovative, user-friendly solution that consolidates all critical school information into a single platform and allows those searching for the right educational institution to make confident choices without the stress of navigating fragmented data like other school-searching platforms.
To ensure Class Quest delivers a valuable solution for parents and guardians overwhelmed by the school search process, we needed clear goals that would define success. Interviews and surveys with parents highlighted their challenges while analyzing competitors, which revealed gaps as well as popular patterns in current school search sites.
Goals:
User Group # 1
Max symbolizes busy professionals, prioritizing convenience and efficiency due to hectic work schedules. He needs a simplified process to find a suitable school near work and home.
User Group # 2
Sam represents the group focused on finding the perfect educational fit for their children. Sam is looking for a school that caters to her children's interests and offers a well-rounded educational experience.
The user flow illustrates the ideal path for our users. Based on this information, we created a flow that guides users to achieve their goals seamlessly and successfully.
The need for a centralized database emerged as the MVP for Class Quest after identifying parents' core frustrations during the school search process. Through user research and interviews, it became clear that gathering information from numerous sources and websites was the most time-consuming and stressful aspect.
This feature addresses one of the key needs of busy parents: the ability to assess schools' geographic location and daily routines. Many parents, like the persona Max, have tight schedules and need schools conveniently located near their homes or workplaces.
Recognizing that every family has unique criteria was a major turning point when selecting a school. The Advanced Search Filters feature enables users to sort through schools based on detailed criteria; Class Quest significantly reduces the time and effort spent browsing irrelevant options.
This feature eliminates the need for parents to visit multiple websites, sort through forums, or rely on word-of-mouth to gather the details they need. Instead they can easily access all the information from one platform.
User testing with a mid-fidelity prototype of the Class Quest app provided crucial insights into the app's usability and areas for refinement. Participants were asked to explore schools and add them to their "Viable Options List" or "Favorites" category, helping to identify key interaction challenges.
User testing revealed that selecting search filters on the go was cumbersome and time-consuming, resulting in an increased time on task. This suggests a more streamlined filter selection process to improve user efficiency and overall experience.
A consistent pain point emerged during usability testing: users needed help with the interaction to switch between the map and list views. This confusion highlighted the need for a more intuitive toggle mechanism to streamline the transition and make it more discoverable.
Participants consistently requested access to more detailed information; a common request was for other parents' reviews of the school. This feedback pointed to an opportunity to enhance the content density, allowing users to make more informed decisions without excessive navigation.
Users needed help switching between the app's map and list views. To address this, we introduced a large, visible Floating Action Button (FAB) on both screens to simplify this interaction. This solution is rooted in Fitts’s Law, which states that the time required to move to a target is affected by size and distance.
During testing, users strongly desired more information, particularly highlighting the importance of reviews from other parents. This consistent feedback indicated a clear opportunity to enhance the content density of our app. In response, we added a dedicated review panel to each school profile, integrating detailed feedback and ratings from parents.
A dedicated screen was added early in the selection process to capture users' school search preferences upfront. By reducing the number of filtering decisions users need to make, we’ve simplified their experience and reduced time on task by 30% in the second testing round.
The filter sidebar remained, allowing parents to make changes on the go. This enhancement gives users real-time control over their search parameters, making it easier to refine results without navigating away from their current view. This improvement ensures a more flexible and user-friendly experience as parents explore options.
The colors were selected to balance professionalism, warmth, and readability. The earthy brown conveys reliability and stability, which is associated with education; purple, often associated with prestige, is off-white, provides an excellent background, and beige adds warmth to the palette.
A simple Minimalist set of icons was the clear choice for this app. The minimalist style helps users recognize functions without the distractions of detailed shading or complex fills, and it also creates a modern appearance that aligns with professional and educational environments.
This can make the app feel more fluid and visually cohesive, especially when paired with other rounded elements like icons, text fields, or cards. Rounded elements naturally guide the eye across the screen. This also creates a softer, friendlier look than sharp-cornered buttons, making class quest welcoming.
Using Poppins and Bebas Neue together gives the app a professional yet friendly look that’s highly readable, easy to navigate, and visually organized. The contrast between the two fonts is firm but not jarring, making it easy to create a clear hierarchy.
Developing our MVP taught me the balance between speed and strategic prioritization. We achieved our core goals within a tight timeframe, though some additional features and implementations still needed to be explored. This experience highlighted the importance of focusing on essential functionalities while staying adaptable for future enhancements. Early feedback was precious, helping us align the product with user needs and refine it even within constraints. Overall, I learned that while working quickly is essential, balancing it with thoughtful prioritization and responsiveness to feedback creates a stronger foundation for product success.
To build on our MVP, we’ll expand prioritized features, establish regular user feedback loops, and optimize for scalability. Running A/B tests will provide data-driven insights on user engagement, while ongoing market analysis will ensure we stay competitive. Documenting our processes will support team knowledge sharing and continuous improvement as we evolve the product.
